Miracles Nearby: Little Stories of St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital
Date
In our disturbing and unquiet times, it is especially important not to forget about the bright and touching moments nearby. Small victories that happen every day in the oncohematology department of the Lviv Children’s Hospital of St. Nicholas are bright drops of hope and joy that have enormous power.
We are grateful to be a part of these changes, constantly supporting the PO EVUM , with which we have been cooperating for many years. Below is a digest of good news from the oncohematology department, which was shared with us by the foundation’s volunteer Serhiy Zosymenko:
The day care is almost ready!
“The first and most important news of this year! Very soon our little patients will be able to be treated in a modern day care — with the support of our partners, the renovation is already in the final stage, and in a few weeks the children themselves will cut the red ribbon. (Wait for the video from the scene!). Treatment should be not only effective, but also as comfortable as possible. In addition, children from all over Ukraine continue to come to the department, and expanding the space is critically important for them.”
“One in a million” – Yana.
“Little Yana, who has already been discharged, came to us for a second examination. The girl underwent one of the most complex operations, and in the media she was called “One in a million” because she had a very rare disease that occurs once in a million children. Now Yana is doing well, she trains her vocal abilities and sings about Ukraine, tries to shoot music videos with her mother and inspires others with her own example. Recently, Yana became the “face” of one of our most important projects, and as a result, we have the most technological microscope in the laboratory of St. Nicholas Hospital, which will now perform tests for all children undergoing examination and treatment.”
PlayStation – a pain medication.
“Sometimes a happy smile from a child in the oncology ward is a new PlayStation. Yes, not an Xbox. And yes, it turned out to be very important. Because sometimes one evening playing an interesting game is a little bit about the return of a real carefree childhood, despite daily IVs, pain and chemotherapy.”
Wig for a little princess.
“One of the girls being treated at our clinic found out that, unfortunately, she would lose her hair during chemotherapy. It was a very difficult and emotional stage for the child, and we found a way to help and calm the girl a little – we gave her a very beautiful and stylish wig. Sometimes a “miracle” is just being there, extending a helping hand in time, and finding a good solution together.”
“I am safe only here!” – Isabella.
“We accept children from all over Ukraine. A family from Kryvyi Rih comes to us for routine check-ups. After discharge, Isabella still walks very slowly and now tries not to leave the house at all. But this week we are expecting her to visit for a check-up, and she is very happy about it, because she feels truly calm and safe only in our caring and friendly team of doctors and volunteers.”
A huge THANK YOU to our partners!
“A representative from a German charity fund, Raquel, finally came to visit us. Raquel had long dreamed of seeing both our departments and the children undergoing treatment here, getting to know them better and talking to the team and parents. Raquel highly appreciated our work and helped make many children’s dreams come true. We are very grateful for your cooperation, help and your kind heart!”
“These little stories are about love, strength, humanity and daily hard work that creates incredible miracles. The world is changing, so we are. But the main thing remains the same — caring for little lives. We sincerely thank everyone who helps. We are there. We believe. We act.”
